Menstrual hygiene is a necessity, however, a major amount of women and girls around the world still lack proper menstrual hygiene.
In some countries, when a girl gets her period, it is looked at as a curse. Check out our blog on Menstrual Hygiene and Mental Health.
Most of the time, women are all hush-hush when they get their periods. When asking for a pad or a tampon, we tend to be super secretive and have super secretive exchanges in the halls when one of our girlfriends gives us a pad. Why? Isn’t this a normal human body function?
Lack of proper menstrual hygiene, not only puts the women at risk for infection, but also affects a girl's “education, self-esteem, and confidence” (Upadhyay). In India alone, out of the 336 million menstruating women, only 121 million (36%) of the women are using sanitary pads.
To combat this issue and societal norm of keeping periods secretive and thus, not gaining the proper materials to keep themselves healthy, the team of Happy2Thrive hopes to work with people around the world to deliver sanitary menstrual products. This cause will not only provide a huge physical help for all the women struggling with their menstrual hygiene, but will also help with protecting young girls’ mental health by preventing them from skipping school and even giving them a bit more confidence.
